The first things<\/span> that come<\/span> to<\/span> my mind<\/span> when I<\/span> think<\/span> of the Greek islands.<\/span> Especially<\/span> sweets and snacks<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span> don’t know about you, but every time<\/span> I<\/span> visit<\/span> an island<\/span>, I<\/span> want to try<\/span> the local products that housewives<\/span> make<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Further down, I<\/span> will talk<\/span> to you about some of the traditional products they make<\/span> in various islands<\/span> of the Aegean (we<\/span> will catch<\/span> the Ionian Sea another time<\/span>.)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Let<\/span>‘s discover<\/span> the traditional flavors of\u00a0Astypalaia<\/span><\/strong>, Leros<\/span><\/strong>,\u00a0and Milos<\/span><\/strong>!!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn one of the most beautiful<\/span> islands of the Dodecanese<\/span>, gazing<\/span> at the sea<\/span> and the windmills<\/span> in the “Chora of Astypalaia island”\u00a0you can taste<\/span> the delicious “<\/strong><\/em>lampropites”<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/span> Made<\/span> from local cheese\u00a0(chlori<\/span><\/strong>)<\/span> and local saffron (zafora<\/span><\/strong>)<\/span> will make<\/span> you lick your fingers<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0They are sprinkled with sesame mix.<\/span> It’s great<\/span> to get<\/span> energy<\/span> and start<\/span> your day<\/span>!<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_single_image image=”2919″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]Another delicacy<\/span> in which zafora<\/span><\/strong> is used<\/span> is<\/span> the “kitrinokouloura<\/strong><\/em>“<\/em>.<\/span><\/span> Housewives<\/span> only knead<\/span> them with milk<\/span>.<\/span> The ingredients<\/span> contained<\/span> in the dough<\/span> are<\/span> butter<\/span>, “chlori”<\/strong> cheese and various spices that give<\/span> them a distinct and slightly spicy<\/span> taste.<\/span>
\nTip:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0They usually, are\u00a0made<\/span> during Easter and kept<\/span> in tin cans all year round.<\/span><\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_gallery interval=”0″ images=”2941,2935,2929″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]Do not leave<\/span> the island<\/span> until you try<\/span> the “pouggia<\/strong>“!<\/span> A combination<\/span> of sweet and salty as they have<\/span> mizithra in their filling<\/span> and are poured<\/span> with local<\/span> aromatic honey.<\/span> Generally<\/span>, there are<\/span> many local<\/span> goodies that you can enjoy<\/span> on the island<\/span> like loukoumades<\/strong>, melekounia<\/span><\/strong>, xerotigana<\/strong>, <\/span>and local<\/span> cheeses (chlori<\/span><\/strong> or ladotyri<\/span><\/strong>)<\/span>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Note:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0In the hotel <\/span>Kallichoron<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the personalized and award-winning\u00a0service of breakfast<\/span> <\/span><\/strong><\/a>includes<\/span> and offers all of the above goodies as well as rusks with aniseed made from the hands<\/span> of\u00a0\u00a0K.<\/span> Evdokia<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n

Secret<\/span>:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0I heard<\/span> that\u00a0Mrs. Evdokia, this year<\/span>, made<\/span> a tremendous traditional\u00a0“pasteli” from her grandmother<\/span>‘s recipe<\/span>!<\/span> So<\/span> if you plan<\/span> your holiday<\/span>\u00a0in Astypalaia<\/span>,\u00a0I want<\/span> photos<\/span> and impressions<\/span> of this pasteli!<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_gallery interval=”0″ images=”2927,2917,2935″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_single_image image=”2938″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]Leros<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
\nAn island<\/span> that offers<\/span> many delicacies and of course<\/span>, my favorite “patsavouropita”<\/strong><\/em> (with crust<\/span> and yogurt<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_gallery interval=”0″ images=”2945,2947″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]Enjoy the “Gavafa<\/span>“<\/strong><\/em> or otherwise the tropical fruit Guava (in spoon sweet)<\/span> that was transferred<\/span> from Africa and cultivated on the island<\/span> of Leros<\/span>.<\/span> Its taste<\/span> is sour, <\/span>and its smell<\/span> is unusual,<\/span> but it is worth trying<\/span> as a sweet, jam or\u00a0juice<\/span>!<\/span>
\nTip:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0The most striking thing though<\/span> is that a single Gavafa<\/span> fruit contains<\/span> four times<\/span> as much vitamin C as an orange<\/span>.<\/em><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_single_image image=”2955″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]Eventually<\/span>, if you find yourself at a wedding<\/span> in Leros<\/span>, taste<\/span>\u00a0“diples”, “pouggia”, almond sweets<\/strong><\/em> or even a “soumada”<\/strong><\/em> (a\u00a0sweet<\/span> drink made from raw almonds)<\/span>.<\/span>
\nTip:<\/span><\/strong> Traditional<\/span> Products of Leros<\/span> can be found in “theikon<\/span>“<\/strong> in Lakki<\/span> and Platanos<\/span> as in “traditional<\/span>“<\/strong> in St.<\/span><\/em> Marina<\/em>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_single_image image=”2620″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]Milos Island<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
\nLast but not least<\/span>, an island<\/span> with infinite beauty and delicious cuisine, Milos<\/span>!<\/span> Give<\/span> me a full<\/span> pan of scented pies and let<\/span> me enjoy<\/span> them with the\u00a0view<\/span> of the sea<\/span>!<\/span> The\u00a0“Pitarakia<\/span>“<\/strong><\/em> of Milos<\/span> with Manura<\/span><\/strong> (local cheese of Milos<\/span>)<\/span> are<\/span> pies<\/span> from simple, thin, elastic dough that becomes wonderfully<\/span> crisp!<\/span>\u00a0It’s\u00a0a little spicy, but it’s because of<\/span>\u00a0its stuffing.<\/span> You will find<\/span> them in bakeries<\/span> and restaurants<\/span>!<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_single_image image=”2953″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]However, let<\/span>‘s say\u00a0goodbye to the little pies<\/span> and savor the\u00a0big<\/span> pies<\/span> and specifically to the “<\/strong><\/em>plakopites”<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/span> In the dough<\/span>, add<\/span> hard cheese (produced<\/span> in Milos<\/span>)<\/span>,<\/span> knead together and spread<\/span> with the rolling pin in thin pies<\/span>.<\/span> Delicious and crispy<\/span>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_single_image image=”2949″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]That,\u00a0although, will<\/span>\u00a0impress<\/span>\u00a0you and it\u00a0will\u00a0surprise<\/span>\u00a0you,\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0the traditional “karpouzopita<\/span>“<\/em> <\/strong>with watermelon,\u00a0honey<\/span>,\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0flour<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0It’s a particular,\u00a0different<\/span>\u00a0choice of\u00a0fruit<\/span>\u00a0for a pie but, definitely, worth getting away from the usual.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_single_image image=”2951″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]Also<\/span>, in all\u00a0bakeries<\/span>, you will\u00a0find<\/span>\u00a0the delicious “Ladenia”.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0It looks like vegetable pizza without the\u00a0cheese<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0Delicious\u00a0Ladenia<\/span>\u00a0you will\u00a0find<\/span>\u00a0in the “Ark of\u00a0flavors<\/span>“<\/strong> in\u00a0Pollonia<\/span>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-5 vc_col-md-5 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_single_image image=”2957″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-7 vc_col-md-7 vc_col-xs-12″][vc_column_text]For dessert<\/span>, how about a “spoon-sweet<\/span>“?<\/span> The “koufeto”<\/strong> <\/em>from crustless sweet<\/span> pumpkin boiling<\/span> in honey<\/span> and almonds<\/span> is made traditionally in Milos island in engagements<\/span> and weddings<\/span>.<\/span> It symbolizes a couple’s beautiful life and fertility.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I hope I inspired you and cast off new culinary explorations!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
